Addis Ababa is witnessing a remarkable transformation, thanks to the dedicated efforts of local organizations committed to community development. These initiatives are not only reshaping the city’s landscape but also improving the lives of its residents.
Empowering Women and Youth
The Livelihoods Improvement for Women and Youth (LIWAY) program, funded by Sida, aims to create employment opportunities for women and young people in Addis Ababa. Over a nine-year period (2017–2026), the program seeks to improve the lives of at least 257,000 individuals by increasing their income and economic opportunities. This initiative focuses on developing local markets, empowering youth and women, and fostering private sector engagement. [Source: SNV]
Enhancing Urban Infrastructure
The Addis Ababa City Administration has completed nearly 16,000 development projects across the capital in the current Ethiopian fiscal year. These projects include the construction of retail shops, workshop sheds, and significant road infrastructure improvements. Notably, over 1,392 kilometers of asphalt, cobblestone, gravel roads, and sidewalks have been constructed or maintained to ease congestion and improve connectivity. Promoting Sustainable Development
Organizations like the Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization (JeCCDO) are dedicated to working with children, families, and communities. Established in 1985, JeCCDO operates with a central office in Addis Ababa and regional offices across Ethiopia. Their programs focus on education, health, water, sanitation, hygiene, urban agriculture, environmental protection, livelihood promotion, child protection, and capacity development of community-based organizations.
